What is Uro-West?
Uro-West is the inaugural urology conference for general practitioners hosted by the Western Health Urology Department in collaboration with North Western Melbourne PHN.
The Uro-West conference delivers up to date information on best practice in urology specifically designed to meet the needs of the general practice context, to develop collaborative practice between GP, urologists and urology nurse practitioners, and provides practical skills training in additional to traditional plenary sessions.
Why Teach Functional Urology?
The inaugural Uro-West Conference theme is Functional Urology.
Incontinence and voiding difficulties are a significant issue in the lives and health of Australians.
• 4.7 million Australians aged 15 and over had incontinence in 2010;
• Overactive bladder syndrome affects 12-17% of the Australian population;
• 1 in 4 men over 70 have incontinence;
• Once a resident in a residential aged care facility, an elderly person has a 27% chance of being incontinent.
The first port of call for these patients is their general practitioner.
Uro-West 2019 aims to help general practice meet the needs of patients with often distressing and life-changing symptoms by presenting up-to-date information that appreciates the complex and fast-paced general practice environment.
GPs have a large role to play in functional urology management and there is scope for enhancing skills such as catheterisation in clinic and aged care facilities, prescription of continence products and management of the pelvic floor, to help keep as many patients in the community with their GP as possible.
A close collaboration with urology colleagues, radiologists and urology nurse practitioners will help GPs determine which patients need tertiary level referral, so that patients receive the best experience of urological care as passible.
